2026 CBYRA High Point Trophy Rules

The central focus of a sailor’s success throughout the racing season is the CBYRA High Point Trophy awards. CBYRA presents these trophies annually as recognition of a sailor’s consistent performance.
  1. CBYRA High Point Trophy competition is open only to CBYRA members.
  2. In case of any conflicts or questions of interpretation between the information in the Sections of these CBYRA High Point Trophy Rules and those stated in the respective Division or Class specific CBYRA High Point Trophy Rules, the CBYRA Rules will take precedence. However, the CBYRA Executive Committee, after consultation with the relevant High Point Recorders, will have the final authority in resolving ANY such conflicts or interpretations.
  3. The CBYRA High Point awards are based upon the principles of fair sailing in sanctioned events under the rules of CBYRA and the RRS in accordance with high standards of good sportsmanship.
  1. CBYRA High Point Scoring/Recording shall be accomplished by the person(s) elected (or assigned) by Division (e.g., COD, Handicap, Junior) as their High Point Recorder(s).
  2. The High Point Recorder will have authority to determine proper High Point records of all Skippers and Boats participating in their respective Events (subject to section A.1 above).
  3. The High Point Recorder will use results provided publicly by the Member Organization as a primary basis of records.
  4. It is the competitor’s responsibility to resolve any questions on accuracy of Race Results (including questions of DNC vs. DNS vs. DNF). Such questions shall be first addressed to the Member Organization before contacting CBYRA or the High Point Recorder.
  5. Any questions or comments on scoring interpretation, accuracy, or other issues shall be in WRITING and provided to CBYRA and their High Point Recorder.
  1. CBYRA High Point Championship Trophies are awarded annually to CBYRA members in the following Divisions:
    • JUNIOR DIVISION
    • ONE DESIGN DIVISION
    • CRUISING ONE DESIGN DIVISION
    • HANDICAP DIVISION
  2. CBYRA Divisional Championship Trophies are awarded to the highest scoring boat in each Division.
  3. Any class, or section shall not receive any High Point Award for a year in which the following minimum participation requirements are not met:
    • Have an average of at least three (3) boats participating in each sanctioned event.
    • Have a minimum of three (3) qualifiers for High Point Awards.
    • Have a minimum of seven (7) active individual members in CBYRA.
  4. Any class, or section that fails to meet CBYRA and its Division minimum requirements shall not receive any High Point Award for any year in which those requirements are not met.
  5. The Perpetual Trophy for each Division, Class or section remains the property of CBYRA, but shall be awarded to the winning owner or skipper and must be returned to CBYRA Offices prior to November 15th of the following year. As an unfortunate result of poor treatment of many of these trophies, CBYRA may require a damage deposit for some perpetual trophies.

Skipper Eligibility

  1. Only Skippers are eligible for CBYRA High Point Awards.
  2. A Skipper shall be a CBYRA Member and one or more of the following:
    • An individual who owns a boat and is a member of a CBYRA Member Organization.
    • An individual who charters a boat and is a member of a CBYRA Member Organization. They will be considered as the Skipper only for the duration of the charter. Challenges to the validity of any charter shall be resolved by the Division in which the boat is competing. A charter need not be in writing to be considered valid.
    • A family or group of individuals who jointly own or charter a boat (Syndicate). For each Event, the Syndicate shall provide the same CBYRA membership number (the number can belong to any person in the family or group) and their affiliated CBYRA Member Club. The Syndicate will be entered and scored as a single entity regardless of the Syndicate member in charge of the boat.
  3. Skipper Qualification for CBYRA High Point Awards:
    • The Skipper (and, as required by Division or Class rules, Boat) shall have met all requirements in regard to measurement, ownership and individual membership prior to being recorded as competing for a High Point Award in the pertinent Class, Section or Division.
    • The Skipper shall have been recorded as competing in not less than the minimum number of Events required by the Division When the class is competing on other than a Bay Wide basis this minimum number of Events shall apply to each of the Regions concerned.

Boat Eligibility

  1. Boats entered into competition in the name of a person other than the Skipper may not be recorded in that Event as being eligible for High Point Award purposes.
  2. Boats shall have current rating certificates, measurement certificate, or other approved documentation in accordance with the pertinent Class Rules on file with the Class in which the boats race.

CBYRA Division Eligibility

  1. JUNIOR, ONE DESIGN & CRUISING ONE DESIGN DIVISIONS:
    • Each Skipper is scored in CBYRA High Point as an individual.
    • A Skipper is not limited to a single hull or sail number.
    • A hull or sail number may be used by different Skippers in different Events.
  2. HANDICAP DIVISION:
    • Recording and presenting CBYRA High Point Awards will use the combination of a Skipper and a boat as a single entity.
    • Each boat entered into a CBYRA Sanctioned Event must be entered in the name of their Skipper in order to be recorded for High Point Award for the year.
    • Exchange of Ownership or Boats:  Except for US Naval Academy Skippers and boats:
      1. If a Skipper races multiple boats in the same Class across different Events during a season, each boat shall be scored separately.
      2. If a new Skipper takes over a boat that has already raced during a season, their scores shall be recorded separately from the previous Skipper.
      3. If a boat changes hulls or ratings, causing a Class change, it shall be scored separately, even if it retains the same name or sail number and Skipper.
  1. CBYRA High Point Scoring is solely based on participation in CBYRA Events.
  2. An eligible Skipper’s score will be based on finishing position against all boats competing in the event, whether eligible for high point scoring or not.
  3. Unless designated otherwise through the Sanction Number, each race, regatta, or series will count as one score, only the final standing in each event being considered.
  4. A Skipper and Boat shall have complied with the CBYRA “Rules for Sanctioned Regattas” which apply to all Classes.
  5. Changes to Class or Section Starts:
    • When good race management practice deems it reasonable and advisable, a Race Committee may start two or more classes or Sections of the same class simultaneously.
    • The Race Committee may elect to divide a Class into multiple starts.
    • Each Division Section will prescribe how to handle these changes.
  6. Number of Competitors:
    • Each Division will prescribe an average number of competitors to be maintained in each event.
  1. Boats that are jointly owned will be recorded in the name of the individual Skipper whose name and CBYRA Individual Membership Number are submitted by the Race Committee conducting the Event. If the boat is registered with CBYRA under a Syndicate, then the syndicate members, regardless of which member is Skipper, are scored as a single entity.
  2. Unless specified in the Division, “Points Earned” (Event Score) are recorded Bay Wide basis. Division Rules may specify “Points Earned” be recorded on a regional basis.
  3. If any of the following occur, the Event shall not be recorded for High Point Awards:
    • Fewer than three (3) boats are scored by the Race Committee as actually competing in the same Class or Section (but subject to high point rule E(5)).
    • There are no finishers in the same Class or Section.
    • The first boat to finish in a Class or Section averages less than 2.0 knots over the course (COD and Handicap Divisions only).
    • The rhumb line length of the course sailed is less than 4.0 nm (COD and Handicap Divisions only).
  4. In multi-race regattas, any required compliance with distance and first finisher average speed shall be determined by the sum of distances sailed and the total average speed over the course for all races sailed under a single CBYRA sanctioned event number.
  5. Records of High Point Trophy “PointsEarned”:
    • The maximum points possible in any Event shall be the points available to the Skipper achieving first place in that Event (regardless of any scoring adjustment, such as redress) and shall include any applicable Bonus Points as outlined by the Division.
    • Any Skipper/Boat which is scored by the Race Committee as not having actually competed (DNC) or started (DNS), in all races of an Event, shall not be recorded as having participated in the Event and shall not be ranked as a “Beaten Boat” by the other contestants for High Point purposes.
    • Each Skipper may discard (throw-out) races in accordance with their Class/Division rules.
    • High Point Award Calculations:
      1. Each Division will denote how they will record “Points Earned”.
  6. Final Standings in Sanctioned Events:
    • Only the final standings in a Sanctioned Event will be considered when computing Points-Earned for that Event.
    • The final standing of an ineligible Skipper in an event will be considered when determining the “Points Earned” by an eligible Skipper.
    • Should the Member Organization   publish ties in the final standings for any Event , the Recorder will break such ties in accordance with RRS Appendix A before assigning points earned toward High Point Trophy awards.
    • The High Point Recorder(s) will compute the final standings for CBYRA High Point Awards in each of the Classes or Sections for every Skipper who has met the requirements for qualification. Final standings will reflect the optional throwout rule stated above.
  7. High Point Award Calculation/Formulas (Formulas and calculations for different DIVISIONS and Classes are found within their specific sections):

When a single Class determines that further subdivision into smaller Class sections (Sections) is necessary to enhance the conduct of competition, such Sections shall be considered by Race Committees and the High Point Recorder as separate Classesfor the conduct of racing or the recording of Sanctioned Events. When the Race Committee deems it advisable, the Sections may be started simultaneously.

Each Fleet, Class, or section which maintains sanctioned status shall be entitled to representation on any applicable Division Committee.

In accordance with CBYRA Bylaws, the Junior Division, One Design Division, Cruising One Design Division, Handicap Division will be responsible for maintaining their CBYRA High Point program.
