Current Cruising One Design Sanctioned Classes

Sanctioning of Cruising One Design Classes

Prospective Status

  1. Any Class of cruising-racing boats produced under one-design specifications and in sufficient numbers to permit competition as a Class without handicap shall be deemed to be a Prospective Class for consideration by the Cruising One-Design Committee for entry into the CBYRA COD Division.
  2. A Prospective Class whose boat owners desire to become a part of the COD Division of CBYRA must submit a written application for Provisional Status to be considered by the COD Committee by 15 September of the year prior to the proposed racing schedule.
  3. As a minimum, this application shall include:
  • The number of boats and their location by CBYRA regions that are potential racers in the class.
  • A brief history of the class and class organization.
  • Formal and written set of Class Rules that govern the class.
  • Evidence of the methods used to require compliance with Class Rules by all owners regarding hulls, sails, rigging and equipment so as to permit fair competition within the class without handicap.
  • Certification that the boats of the Class have cruising accommodations, self-bailing cockpits, and carry a minimum complement of racing sails to include spinnaker and genoa/jib.
  • Classes that are acceptable to the COD Committee will be placed in Provisional Status for the next competitive season in CBYRA.

Provisional Status

  1. While in Provisional Status, the Class must accomplish the following minimum requirements:
  • Display an active class association that polices its rules in a credible manner.
  • Have a minimum of five (5) qualifiers for High Point awards.
  • Have an average of at least five (5) boats participating in each sanctioned event.
  • Produce at least eight (8) members of the Class who maintain paid-up membership in CBYRA as individuals.
  • Submit the Class Rules to the COD Committee for review prior to 15 September of the year of Provisional Status. Particular attention will be paid to the provisions dealing with the required safety devices for night racing.
  • Classes that fail to meet the above criteria during the year of Provisional Status may be denied acceptance into the COD Division as fully Sanctioned and may be denied continuance in Provisional Status. In the latter instance, the Class must wait two (2) full years before re-applying for consideration.
  • Classes that meet all of the requirements will be elevated to fully Sanctioned Status and shall be entitled to representation on the Cruising One-Design Committee.

Full Sanctioned Status

Classes in Full Sanctioned Status will be voting members on the Cruising One Design Committee, including ability to elect and serve as the Chair.

Retention of Sanctioned Status

Retaining sanctioned class status requires the following minimum standards:

  • Have an average of at least five (5) boats participating in each sanctioned event.
  • Have a minimum of five (5) qualifiers for High Point Awards.
  • Have a minimum of eight (8) paid-up members in CBYRA.
  • Each class is guaranteed a throw-out for participation. Without affecting a position or a score of an individual competitor, for the purpose of average participation only, a class will drop the lowest participated race after a minimum of six (6) races are completed.
  • Any Class or scored Region of a Class that fails to meet the above criteria as of the end of the competitive season in a single year shall revert to Probationary Status for the following year. Should the Class continue to fail to meet the criteria for retention of fully Sanctioned Status during the year of first entering Probationary Status, the Class may be dropped from the COD Division entirely. In such an instance, the Class shall be required to wait at least two (2) full years before re-applying for Provisional Status.

Regional Subclasses:

  1. Individual sanctioned Classes may elect to be recorded for High Point Awards on a multi-Region rather than Bay-wide basis. When a class has elected to be recorded for High Point Awards on a regional basis, the above minimum requirements must be met in each of the Regions in which the Class is competing for separate awards.
  2. Each class, regardless of the number of regions in which it competes, shall be entitled to only a single representative on the Cruising One-Design Committee.
